What you’re seeing is not only blatant plagiarism of our work, but the relentless determination of those pursuing anti-Blackness. Public Service Announcement: #metoo As survivors Public Service Announcement: #metoo

As survivors and advocates of sexual violence we do not condone having abusers in any activism space. It’s up to us to show up for survivors and support them in trauma-informed ways.

Defending and enabling these predators puts all of us in danger.

Restorative justice is NOT mediation between a survivor and their abuser.

Naming an abuser is NOT doxxing.

This is a call to action to urge you all to stop defending misogynistic and violent predators.

In a community that shares the desire to ‘take care of us’, shaming and disrespecting survivors in order to shield those who are inflicting harm is the furthest thing from it.

We ask this out of respect - please do not invite us to your gatherings if you are choosing to have abusers there.

We must organize, amplify and utilize our collective power and show up against settler colonialism and white supremacy. See you there 👊🏾

Juneteenth 2021 was incredible - it was beautiful Juneteenth 2021 was incredible - it was beautiful to see so many Portlanders celebrating throughout the city! This year, honoring Black descendants of slavery has meant more than ever amidst the ongoing struggle against anti-Blackness in America.

We've heard continued calls for defunding police and subsequent uprisings to dismantle the white supremacist values of our country. We are continuously witnessing a display of social impact in community through mutual aid. We have benefitted from the shared resources that are no longer being gatekept from grassroots organizations and on the ground organizers.

Thank you to everyone who continues to show up for racial justice and who have changed their lives to make social change possible.

Many organizers are working through trauma and experiences compounded on top of a particularly polarizing year - please remember that self-preservation is not only necessary, but that you are deserving of it.

This Juneteenth, we were honored to be in a position to give back to community by investing in organizations who are determined to do their part. One of the recipients of that support was @ourstreetspdx, who are in need of immediate support due to displacement. Please donate to keep them active and sign up to volunteer for their community garden projects and meal distribution events. Please enjoy photos from the Juneteenth week of service sponsored by DSP! Also a huge thank you to Kee’s Loaded Kitchen and her staff for pulling off the largest #FeedingBlackPortland of all time! So many people were able to eat free, delicious soul food in honor of community and Black emancipation.

The priority placed on building mutual aid networks last summer has been instrumental in maintaining the momentum for social change when it’s been needed the most. We know that the fight against racial injustice, police violence and white supremacy doesn’t lie within the next American administration, but within ourselves - we have the power of community to rely on one another and we have to be mindful of the detrimental changes that are taking place around us.

We do more than just give away free books. We curate book lists with the intention of empowering a generation both young and old. Black authors, Black anthologies, Black art and Black futures matter. There is no greater way to invest in our futures than to enrich ourselves with knowledge to inspire creativity. We must learn our history (you, me, ours) in order to dismantle oppressive systems and build new communities of care together. We have to look back on how far we’ve come in order to see how long there is to go.

We were recently included in the @physiciansforhum We were recently included in the @physiciansforhumanrights Physicians for Human Rights annual report for our investigative advocacy work in banning tear gas in the city of Portland. Our Riot Control Agents Report, published in June of 2020, not only illuminated mass disparities against systematically marginalized groups, but it also proved the irreparable harm being committed by law enforcement agencies. Read both of these informative reports in our bio.

On June 19th, we invite you to meet us at Portland’s Best Food Cart, Kee’s Loaded Kitchen, where we will be covering all of the days’ meals in honor of Juneteenth! If you’ve yet to try Kee’s Loaded you will be in awe of her flavorful creations - one meal at #Loaded can feed one - three people!

We will be set up with a table, please wear your mask and social distance when you are approaching our volunteers. There will be free artivism and youth activist bags filled with beautiful Black books, art supplies and educational materials for you to explore your creativity as it relates to social justice.

In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve given out $30,000 in donations to local groups who have been working hard to build communities of care; Our Streets PDX, Sanctuary Produce Farm and Peacekeeper Society are incredible groups with missions that are dear to the work we do - please lend your support to them and continue to help us support this outreach by giving as you can.

Your recurring donations have made our work possible.

Please continue to share and support - our community action counts on it!

If you missed our virtual Spring Break Out, the full series of edited videos will be out in time for Juneteenth on our YouTube channel with captions. Look forward to seeing them on all of our socials as well - thank you so much to our panelists and to our media team who made the program happen!

On May 1, 1865 formerly enslaved Americans started On May 1, 1865 formerly enslaved Americans started what we now know as Memorial Day to honor 257 slain Union Soldiers who were buried in mass graves. Weeks of labor were necessary in order to unearth the soldiers and provide proper burials, and afterward, there was a large parade organized to show gratitude and honor for their lives.

The 10,000 person parade was led by 2,800 young Black children where they marched and sang freedom songs. Please carry this history into your week as we continue to liberate vital truths from Black archives.

Every year, Don’t Shoot Portland connects with our community to build educational outreach and to promote America’s Black history, emancipation and reconstruction. The work we do to dismantle state violence intersects with our history of Black liberation, reaching far before the Emancipation Proclamation. Let’s continue to share this history in order to move forward.

This year, we will be organizing with local mutual aid organization, Our Streets PDX @ourstreetspdx, to collaborate on our Juneteenth celebration! Please sign up through our bio for volunteer shifts related to this years’ gathering as well as to learn more about the massive community service they are doing. They are doing incredible, much needed work in our city and will need a lot of support to get it done.

Sanctuary Produce Farm @sanctuaryproducefarm is a Black run CSA that we will also be working with to make our Juneteenth programming and family outreach happen this year! Please support their work in prioritizing sustainable agriculture to provide free produce boxes for BIPOC families in the Dalles and beyond. Your donations make our support of these initiatives possible and allow these free community projects to happen.
.
Please share the work that Don’t Shoot Portland does with your family, friends and online networks and encourage them to donate or to sign up for our monthly newsletters!

A year ago today, we witnessed the tragic response A year ago today, we witnessed the tragic response to state violence in America. The murder of George Floyd affected all of us. While under quarantine, we had time to reflect and organize. We showed up for one another through mutual aid and community service. We did what matters most in times like these - we came together to build community. To say we’ve experienced a year of hurt would not be saying enough. We’ve witnessed the rise of community strength, power and resilience: members of our communities made the choice to fight for justice, to amplify calls to action and to organize mass resources for those who were without. The numerous murders of unarmed Black Americans shifted our fears of Covid 19 to the reality of a pandemic we could not be vaccinated against - white supremacy.

What we must take away during this time of reflection is the power of individual activism. Activism isn’t always throwing yourself into the line of fire - it’s being there for your community - it’s providing care to those who need it. It’s engaging with one another with respect and consideration. As we uplift and amplify social movements around the world, your solidarity and commitment to change is the impact needed. We must continue to evolve alongside one another to extend the work. Art, history and education are the tools we have used to empower ourselves and to dismantle the systems that are not designed for our benefit. Together we will rise and continue to take care of one another in community. 🎨: @ameyamarie

Every year as we approach Mother’s Day we celebrate the caretakers of life but we are also forced to confront the grief and undeniable pain from the loss of loved ones. This is a particularly hard weekend for so many, and with the recent string of tragic shootings in our city, we want to extend ourselves as a space of advocacy for those affected.
.
Last year Portland suffered nearly 1,000 shootings and in 2021 we are averaging two homicides per week. We know that these shootings are rarely investigated and this blatant dismissal has been made clear for hundreds of families who have sought justice. We are overwhelmed with sorrow and hurt because so many of those lost are members of a community filled with people we know and love. If your family has been directly affected by this recent gun violence, please contact us if you need advocacy. Your loss is our community’s loss. We will do what we can to make sure you receive the critical support you need.
