Artists for Black Lives: A Black Lives Matter Installation & Art Auction by Don't Shoot Portland

"Black Art is for Social Change. As a community organization, we are constantly using art to move the conversations about race and patriarchy into the actions needed to address the inequities that exist for Black Americans. In this work, art is a weapon used on the front lines of the movement for Black Lives."

August 4 - August 28, 2022

HOLDING Contemporary is excited to present an immersive installation and art auction with local civil rights non-profit Don’t Shoot Portland throughout the month of August 2022. This special project thematically focuses on the support of Black music, literature, and art that have inspired their social justice work. Select items will be available to bid on in person and online throughout the run of the exhibition.
Visit during gallery hours on Thursday through Sunday from 12-5pm.

Attend the opening reception in the gallery or online Saturday, August 6th | 2-5pm

Our opening night festivities at the gallery will feature hip-hop and soul music on vinyl, complimentary catering with Sundayz Soul Food and the first public viewing of Don’t Shoot Portlands’ fine art collection. There will also be an online component, featuring a virtual screening party of Recipe for Change: Amplifying Black Women, the new Daytime Emmy Award-Nominated series that gathers celebrities, chefs, activists, and creators around the dinner table to center the powerful stories and experiences of Black women while celebrating their perseverance and strength and making space for joy. We will watch the first episode through Don’t Shoot Portlands’ event viewing link here and participate afterward in a live group discussion.

Art auction

All contributions to this public art auction will go directly towards the work of Don’t Shoot Portland’s legal advocacy, art & educational programming, all free services that support underserved communities in the Pacific Northwest. The auction will be live for bidding on August 4th, 2022 at 12pm PST.
