Cancellation Notice - Reclaim MLK March

Dear Community,

After deep contemplation, Don't Shoot PDX has made the difficult decision to cancel our 10th Annual Reclaim MLK March, scheduled for  Monday January 15th, due to the severe ongoing weather conditions. The safety of our community is our top priority and we feel that canceling is for the best. We still look forward to celebrating ten years of  activism in 2024  and share your disappointment in having to make the decision to cancel this annual event.

Thank you so much for 10 years of Community In Action.  Reclaim MLK has been our largest and most consistent annual program.

Thank you to Professor Ernest Crim III for joining us virtually to deliver a powerful lecture on Black History and Liberation. Please watch the thoughtful and well researched presentation here and please  share it with your students, family and friends! He surprised our participants with his research about Oregon and his thoughts on the Oregon Trail.

Calls to Action for Reclaim MLK

The meaning behind this March is to mobilize for community action. We encourage you to spend tomorrow and the rest of this week looking out for one another through these temperature freezes and power outages by taking action through one of the local initiatives below:

  • Volunteer at City Shelters across Multnomah County: Click here for a list of shelters across the city in need of volunteer support.

  • There are so many groups responding to the needs of the community. Please follow our socials for updates and shared resources from those who are making a difference (stay in touch by joining us on social media; our handle is @dontshootpdx on Instagram/Facebook/LinkedIn). If you’re on the ground doing critical response work and need a boost to raise awareness in our community, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at contact@dontshootpdx.org.

We hope to see you all at our most upcoming events, including the exhibition opening of Policing Justice at PICA (Portland Institute of Contemporary Art) on February 23! Details on the panel and accompanying programs can be found here

Huge thank you to Lisa Loving at KBOO for having our founder, Teressa Raiford on your radio show Keeping It Real earlier this week! We are always so grateful for the chance to share our work on community-based media platforms. Please listen to the interview here

Sign up for our newsletter to get posted hours at our office for youth and families to pick up free books and art supplies meant to be given out at the Reclaim MLK March. If you are registered to volunteer, we will be pivoting to a virtual meet up scheduled for 1pm on Monday and if you’re able to join us please note that we will be sending a link invitation.

Thank you for your commitment to the cause, and we look forward to your continued support in 2024.
