Spring Break Out 2023

We are excited to announce our new home for Don’t Shoot Portland - an office headquarters, DSPDX Annex at 927 NW Everett. Thank you to all of the hard working volunteers who have made this big transition happen smoothly!

Our annual Spring Break Out will be hybrid - join us online March 27 through March 31 from 1 to 2pm PST each day.

This year we are honored to have two inspiring authors Alice Faye Duncan (Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop; Yellow Dog Blues; Evicted!: The Struggle for the Right to Vote) and Kim Johnson (This is My America; Invisible Son), as part of this years’ event.

We are also hosting a three day stream of On These Grounds, a documentary about a school resource officer in South Carolina assaulting a young Black girl with the footage going viral, ultimately leading to national outrage and social discourse. The free stream begins on Tuesday and ends with a discussion on Thursday at 2pm PST with civil rights attorney Juan Chavez of Oregon Justice Resource Center.

Monday, March 27 - Author Talk with Alice Faye Duncan from 1-2pm PST. Join us via Zoom.

Alice Faye Duncan is a National Board Educator who writes books for young learners. Some of her titles include Yellow Dog Blues; Evicted!: The Struggle for the Right to Vote; and Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop. Alice lives in Memphis, Tennessee, that big river city famous for STAX Records and civil rights leaders such as Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, and Dr. James Lawson. Visit her at www.alicefayeduncan.com

Tuesday, March 28 - On These Grounds. Three day virtual screening starts Tuesday through Thursday with a discussion following. Watch the movie from 3/28 through 3/30! Link here.

Wednesday, March 29 - Author Talk with Kim Johnson from 1-2pm PST. Join us via Zoom.

Kim Johnson held leadership positions in social justice organizations as a teen and in college, and is now an author and vice provost at the University of Oregon. She maintains engagement in various organizations while also mentoring Black student leaders and serving as a graduate advisor and member of a historically Black sorority.

This Is My America is her bestselling novel that explores racial injustice against innocent Black men who are criminally sentenced and the families left behind to pick up the pieces. She is an award-winning novelist, with 2021 accolades that include the Pacific Northwest Book Award and Malka Penn Human Rights Award for Children's Literature.

Thursday, March 30 - Discussion of On These Grounds from 1-2pm PST. Zoom link here.
